2005 Chevrolet Avalanche With Auto Air, Blower Problems

My 2005 Chevy Avalanche Blower stopped working. Looked at your fix for the blower resistor. Took my glove box out and I don't have that, I have what looks like a module. Fan ran yesterday but not very strong, then started and stopped. Today would not stop. I have the automatic climate control in the truck. Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave,
First turn your ignition switch on and place your hand on the blower motor. Next turn your a/c on with the fan switch adjusted to low blower check to see if you can feel the blower motor turning. If you can adjust the speed up slowly and see if you can feel and increase in the blower speed. Assuming that you cannot, you will next need your voltmeter. Place the leads on the black + and purple- wires at the blower motor connector you should have voltage. Next go the the blower motor control processor and check for power and ground on the red + and black -. You should have 12 volts. Now place your positive lead in the smaller purple w/ white wire and your negative lead in the black wire (in the 3 wire connector). Monitor voltage as you change blower speeds up and down. You should see a change in voltage as you adjust the blower speed control switch. I If it does and the blower motor does not change speeds, then the blower motor control processor is faulty. In the event that you do not have a varying voltage on the purple w/ white wire while adjusting the blower speed then the control head is probably bad, but it really should be checked with a scan tool like the GM Tech 2. If your blower motor control processor is faulty we can supply it to you at 84.95 it is part number 15-80567. It is not currently in our online store so you will have to order by phone. 1-800-640-0747

I have the same problem with the same truck, would it be a good idea to just replace the blower motor?

Sparky said...

You could but I doubt that it needs it if your mileage is fairly low and the truck is not used in a very dusty location.

and look for a post I did on September 29, 2009 about a Silverado with the same problem and the same part you need for your truck.

Sparky,
I have a 2005 Tahoe. Everything works fine on the a/c heating controls except level 1. Levels 2-5 work fine and blow very well. Could you please advise what might be the problem and the parts I might need for a potential fix.
Thanks,
Terry

Hey there Sparky,
I have an 07 Avalanche. I turned on my heat the other night and got nothing blowing on any level. It will not blow for a/c either. I have a dual control unit. It does have warm air coming out when on 90 and cool air out when on 60. Is it the blower that has gone bad? What are my options and or solutions?

Thanks B

i have 2005 avalanche the blower works but is sqweaking .

Sparky said...

Squeaky blower motors tend to draw more amps in addition to irritating us. I would recommend changing the blower to prevent damage to the rest of the system. If you want you can email me at sparkysanswers@gmail.com and I could help you with locating the repair and part info you need. It is a very easy replacement. I will be in and out today so I may not get back with you for a while.

I have a 2005 avalanche with dual controls for heating and air. The fan blower has five settings. Each setting stopped working one at a time until now I only have setting number five that still blows air. Can you tell me what is wrong and how to fix

Sparky,
First off I wanna say that your blog has been really helpful so far. But I'm still running into a snag. I have 2005 tahoe with auto climate control. The fan will not come on at any speed when using the buttons. I have tested the wires on the resistor. The red and black (with key off) i get 11.56v, and when I swap to the purple w/white stripe lead, i only get .3v What gives? Tested fuses and they are good as well. I have absolute no power to the fan motor at all (doing it as stated in your post). Not sure where to go from here. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The voltage on the small purple wire is an output of the module. It should be a nominal 5 volts with the key off. Please read the information at the following repair post address. The replacement module design has changed.

I have a 05 Chevy avalanche and when I turn the key, the heater blower will work some of the time. As soon as I start the engine the fan stops working. A few times I have got lucky and the blower keeps working. Can you help me?

Please go to my main site www.sparkys-answers.com and look for the "Sparky's Repair Article Menu" tab. Go to GM Full Sized Trucks and SUV's. There are several articles there that may relate to your problem. Look under HVAC.

Sparky, your reading is awesome and very informative- thank you
I have same problem but on an 02 avalanche with auto controls.
it started out intermittently working- sometimes the blower would shut off and come back on other times I would have to turn ignition off and back on. when this would happen I would lose all blower speed functions.
I have followed your post I have replaced the speed module aka resistor, the blower motor and the control panel in dash.
I have check power coming from dash orange12+ , black ground and small grey/ black isvarying depending on speed setting.. with ignition on.
when I plug in the resistor to the blower, I get 0 power, n0 power when I unplug it either..
I have checked all the fuses , relays that I know of and all check good. I have ohmed out the ground to the body and it appears good. I have found no bad connectors or burnt ends...

HELP PLEASE. AWEFULLY HOT HERE IN TEXAS..

Hi Bryan,

If I am reading your comment correctly, you are losing power on the large orange wire at the blower speed controller when the blower motor harness is connected. The blower motor places a load on the system and is showing that there is a weak circuit. There are two common causes for this condition on your vehicle. There will either be a burnt terminal underneath the underhood fuse box or there will be a burnt in line harness connector above the glove box area. I have never had to repair the later but my under standing is that the dash cover will need to be removed to inspect the connector. I have done articles on how to remove the dash cover on later model truck and the procedure should be similar. It is on my main site,

Here is the link address. You will need to copy and paste it.

This is a link on what to look for under the fuse box.

I have a 2005 Chevy avalanche and my heater stopped working. I get nothing when the weather is cold like lower than 20s please advise

Sparky said...

Start by checking the coolant level and make sure the engine is heating up properly. A stuck open or missing thermostat will not allow the engine to build enough heat to supply the heater core.

i have a 2005 avalanche with dual climate control. When I turn the heater or ac on, the blower isn't turning on. When it does randomly come on I have to disconnect the battery to get it to shut off. I replaced the resistor and relay today and still no heat. please help.

Sparky said...

Hi Ryan,

Does your Avalanche have auto/digital controls? Since you have replaced some blower parts, does the blower work but there is no heat? Or is there no blower working?

ryan said...

yes I have the digital controls, and the blower isn't working at all. The control is showing that it is on but the fan isn't working. I also had advance auto check the blower itself while I was buying the resistor and the blower does work

Sparky said...

What is the part number of the parts that you have installed? What are the voltage readings at the black, red and purple wires that were in the original three wire connector?

Hi I have a 2005 avalanche love it, going crazy, had ask the above problems got them fixed. Now if it rains it blows the fan, but if I drive abd move I get air through the vents. WHEN I stop so does the air. Please help my mechanic casus in going crazy.

I would start by checking for signs of water at the blower speed controller. If present the a/c drain tube will need to be cleared.
